What's the difference between NANOWEB® and POLYWEB® coatings?

The difference between our coating ‘flavors’ is found in the tone and feel of the strings. NanoWeb® coated strings sound and feel like uncoated strings – they are bright and lively, and the coating is so micro thin that you can barely tell it’s there.

PolyWeb® coated strings have a balanced tone and smooth response – they sound like strings that have been ‘played in’. In addition, PolyWeb® coated strings feel comfortably smooth and help reduce finger squeak.

Do Elixir® Strings sound different than ordinary strings?

NANOWEB® coated strings sound and feel like uncoated strings – they are bright and lively, and the coating is so micro thin that you can barely tell it’s there. POLYWEB® coated strings have a balanced tone and smooth response – they sound like strings that have been ‘played in’ for a couple of hours.

How do I know it's time to change strings if the sound doesn't change?

Elixir® Strings last a really, really long time – but not forever! Typically it’s time to change when the plain steel strings (high E and B) show signs of excessive wear. String life differs from player to player, but our strings generally last from 3 to 5 times longer that non-coated string.

I like bright sounding strings. Do you make any bright sounding strings?

Our NANOWEB™ coated strings sound and feel like uncoated strings – they are bright and lively, and the coating is so micro thin that you can barely tell it’s there. NANOWEB™ coated strings are the brightest flavor we make.

What causes ordinary guitar strings to go dead?

You do. Every time you pick up your guitar and play, you leave tiny bits of dead skin, body oils, sweat, and all types of gunk loitering on your strings. Stuck between the windings (a space we call the “Critical Zone of Tone™”), these contaminants dampen vibration and accelerate corrosion.

Are all coated guitar strings created equal?

In a word, no. Elixir® Strings are coated in a unique and patented way to protect wound strings from contaminants and corrosion. A flexible, strong, yet micro-thin polymer tube defends the Critical Zone of Tone™ from invading enemies. You can think of it like a heat shrink tube that’s thinner than a human hair. Nothing (including the coating) gets between the windings. The result? Strings that sound and feel their best three to five times longer than ordinary strings.

Other companies have tried different solutions like coating the wrap wire itself. Sure they stay looking shiny, but it does nothing to solve the contamination problem of gunk between the windings, and they go dead nearly as fast as ordinary strings.

As you might guess, many people think coated strings are all the same. But as you have just read, only Elixir® Strings truly solve the problem and deliver on the promise of great tone and long life.
